Mati Barbero, Co-Founder & COO of Schoolin1

Amix Tech Lab ( www.amixtechlab.com ) is a technology business accelerator platform that started in MEXICO when I was a hashtagDigitalNomad and connects LATAM with Austin-Dallas-Houston-San Antonio, Boston and London thanks to local partners.

Our focus is scaling up CEO’s of companies in niches such as SaaS, BioTech, Defense, AgTech, FinTech, FoodTech, and ClimaTech.

We connected with MATI BARBERO, Co-Founder & COO of Schoolin1, an EdTech App digitalizing the K12 schools’ information ecosystem through a friendly and agile multilanguage AI-powered all-in-one student information system («SIS») that supports teachers, parents, and principals with our different tools

1. Tell us what has been the main difficulty for the growth of Schoolin1.

Education is one, if not the most, of the hardest industries to penetrate. Specially when expanding from LatAm to the US;

1) Barriers to entry
2) Non-tech industry
3) Lack of innovation in the last 10-15 years
4) Long sales cycles

Today, with Schoolin1, the all-in-one SIS App for K12 schools, we are challenging the above bullet points but it’s far from easy. Even with the round raised which would mean we could do marketing, it’s still a 1×1 conversation through months with decision-makers in order to win certain deals.

This might not sound inspiring to whoever is looking to develop EdTech in the States. Well… it’s true, this industry is tough! However, it’s still inspirational to contribute to future generations of kids 🙂

2. Is English a limitation in Miami?

English is not entirely a limitation 🙂 Miami has the advantage of having many decision-makers who are Latino. However, not knowing the language will clearly prevent you from being involved in legal and technical details of administration, which, in the vast majority of cases is written en English.

When it comes to doing business and having conversations, you may find 100% Latin people (if you attend those events) which, again, demonstrates there’s no such a problem there.

3. Explain to us what your experience has been as a Limited Partner, Startup Advisor/Mentor investor for 500 Latam.

Simply amazing!

I love working (now, also, investing) with startups, identifying pain points, adding value, and linking them with funding or business opportunities. Thanks to Rene Lomeli Ojeda, GP 500, and David Alvo, GP & Founder Impacta VC, I am learning how VCs work internally so that hopefully one day I can run my own VC Firm to give back to Latinx Founders. Right now I am writing this from Tokyo, Japan, where 500 invited me to mentor 30, Japanese, startups with their market-entry strategy for the US. I believe it’s one of the most close-to-founders VCs and greatest community (on a global level).
