Galápagos-Based Emma Darwin Foundation to Launch Community Projects Along the Chilean Coast

In a groundbreaking step toward social innovation and coastal empowerment, the Emma Darwin Foundation (FED)—a renowned organization based in the Galápagos Islands—is exploring the launch of high-impact community projects in the coastal regions of Atacama, Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Maule, O’Higgins, Los Ríos, and Los Lagos. The initiative is being coordinated in partnership with AmixTechLab.com, a platform focused on accelerating community-led solutions.
Ximena Córdova, Director of FED, has expressed strong interest in visiting Chile to work directly with local leaders and women-led initiatives, applying a holistic methodology that has seen major success across the Galápagos archipelago.
“The loss of ecosystem services leads to deep-rooted social conflicts that must be addressed with urgency and a comprehensive lens,” said Córdova. Since its founding in 2018, the Foundation has championed two central causes: the fight against gender-based violence and the protection of the environment.
A Holistic Approach to Community Development
The proposed initiative aims to deepen existing social diagnostics in Chile’s coastal communities by focusing on the empowerment of women and the integration of social, economic, cultural, and spiritual dimensions. According to Maximiliano Morales, Agronomist and coordinator of Córdova’s visit,
“The goal is to create a community roadmap to inform public policy and development projects that tangibly improve the lives of women and their families.”
The project includes targeted actions such as training in English, financial education, wellness programs, access to justice, and improved public services, with a special focus on women’s active participation in the local economy.
Local Collaboration and Global Inspiration
Córdova’s proposed visit could elevate Chilean coastal communities to the international stage, especially through alignment with existing women-led ventures such as scallop farming in Tongoy, Constitución, Chiloé, and Puerto Montt.
FED’s approach is inspired by its close collaboration with the Charles Darwin Research Station in Galápagos, where it has developed non-formal education programs for young women in environmental stewardship and economic integration.
Honoring Emma Darwin’s Legacy
The Foundation is named after Emma Darwin, wife of the legendary naturalist Charles Darwin. With the permission of her descendants, her name honors her silent yet profound support in Darwin’s moral and scientific journey.
“Emma represents the quiet force behind historic change—a symbol of commitment and resilience,” says Córdova.
Through this initiative, the Emma Darwin Foundation seeks to replicate in Chile a transformative, inclusive, and sustainable model of community development, led by women and inspired by global best practices.
Maximiliano Morales, former Manager of the ‘Nodo Estratégico Chile Vitivinícola’ program at the Innovation Agency of the Government of Chile, will initiate efforts to secure sponsorships and strategic partnerships aimed at facilitating the arrival of Ximena Cordova in Chile and the implementation of a pilot project in a selected region of the country.»
