Mario Brassesco – Venture Partner at Encomenda and co-founder at Nuclio Founders
AmixTechLab.com, the business development platform it’s expanding to offer acceleration, softlanding & sales strategy services around the world and we are in Europe thanks to Francesca Bridgewater from England. In this quest, we are going to connect with the decision makers from Europe.
We interviewed Mario Brassesco – Venture Partner at Encomenda and co-founder at Nuclio Founders, which is the online educational program launched by Nuclio, the leading startup ecosystem in Spain.
Which are the main strenghts and opportunties that Nuclio offers compared to other hubs in Spain?
Nuclio is an ecosystem that has been created by serial entrepreneurs and investors, with strong experience and know-how in creating, launching, scaling and exiting tech companies. Nuclio is not only an investor, but as a co-founder for incubated companies that offers a wide range of services that are crucial for entrepreneurs in the first stages, such as fundraising, legal, go-to-market… support. Nuclio has already launched and helped well-known companies such as Housfy (leading proptech company in Spain), Games For a Living (co-founded by former VP at Activision Blizzard and King) and Kintai. The ecosystem has already launched more than 20 companies, but not only startups. Nuclio has also created companies whose purpose is to help its own ecosystem, as well as other companies that are around it, like Nuclio Talent (digital talent headhunting), Nuclio School (masters and bootcamps), Nuclio Labs (web3 launchpad) and Nuclio Founders (online educational program for entrepreneurs).
Which is the top 5 countries that you are getting founders from? Any particular trend?
Are you planning a strategy to attract more countries? Or you get only Spanish startups? Our primary market is Spain, as it is where we were born as an ecosystem. Most of the entrepreneurs that work with us come from this region. However, some Nuclio initiatives have expanded that area of influence. For example, Nuclio Labs has a subsidiary in Toronto, Canada, to find Tier 1 talent in the web3 space in that region. Nuclio School has its own local firm in Mexico and provides educational services worldwide. And Nuclio Founders, whose aim is to help entrepreneurs towards education, has entrepreneurs coming from Latin America. As the different parts of the Nuclio Ecosystem expand, we will see more and more international talent and founders getting a closer contact with Nuclio.
How many startups have you supported since the start?
Any particular trend you can share? As Nuclio we have already launched more than 20 companies. As Nuclio Founders we have more than 60 entrepreneurs in our educational program. As Nuclio Talent, for example, we organize yearly weekend hackathons with more than 50 entrepreneurs per event. To regards trends, we see that the age of the average entrepreneur is increasing, as professionals with large experience in particular industries are understanding more and more the entrepreneurship game and want to create products around problems they have found. We think this trend will keep increasing within the years.
Where usually founders continuing growing, in Spain or outside? There are two common paths for Spanish companies to grow. Once entrepreneurs think that it is time to expand their businesses, they tend to either (1) start operations in other Southern Europe countries (such as Portugal, Italy or South France, where market characteristics and cultural aspects are very similar vs. Spanish ones) or (2) start operations in Latin America (where there is no language barrier, but cultural, legal and business-related aspects are very different). Of course, there are entrepreneurs that think that the «Spanish market is enough», but we encourage founders to expand their businesses into other regions in order to maximize the company potential.
Do you have support from corporates or government, angels? Sure we do. Nuclio has its own venture capital fund, where we can find some of the most well-known national business angels. Moreover, leading corporates and public institutions have also invested in our fund, as well as in some of the companies we have already launched. It is crucial to unite forces with the corporate and public sector in order to keep building great companies.
Which are the main requirements to be part of Nuclio in 2024? In order to build a tech company in Nuclio you need to understand what a startup really is, having some experience in this industry or deeply understanding the problem you are trying to solve. You can contact Nuclio at nuclio.com, or checking co-founding missing positions at https://www.nucliotalent.com/en/offers/. As per Nuclio Founders, our programs (which are in Spanish) are open for everybody that is willing to make the effort. You can check them at www.nucliofounders.com.
Do you work with other cities in spain partnering to secure the growth of your startups?
Which are your plans on that? Nuclio has offices both in Barcelona and Madrid, and we have extremely good relationships with some regional institutions that are doing a great job and also assist local entrepreneurs. We believe that it is very important for all the Spanish ecosystem to be unite and help each other. We cannot do our things on our own. Otherwise we will lose the opportunity to provide the real help that startup needs.
